The music from Hal Hartley’s films has, over the years, attracted almost as much attention as the films themselves. Some of this had to do with the fact that he made so much of it himself and this helped to fix him in the public eye as a representative independent filmmaker – making even the music on his own!

The reality is a little different. Hartley claims to do very little “on his own” and this new collection of the signature tunes from thirteen years of making films does tend to highlight his casual collaboration with a core group of performers. It also provides an overview of his evolution as a composer, from the raw and spacious guitar licks of Surviving Desire and Simple Men to the rich and unsettling strains of Amateur and No Such Thing.

The CD includes a lot of previously unreleased material, including selections from No Such Thing and the play Soon (both the European and US versions). There are also tracks from The Book of Life and (the rarely seen) Kimono. Finally, there are new recordings of music from Trust, The Unbelievable Truth, and Flirt.
