Trust (1991)

1Trust

Maria is a self-centered teenage suburban brat, until she gets pregnant by her un-loving quarterback boyfriend and gives her father a fatal heart attack. Matthew is a rowdy and disillusioned computer engineer with a vicious temper. Disowned by her devastated mom, dumped by her boyfriend, and shunned by her friends, Maria wanders the streets and bumps into Matthew. These two exiles fall in together and set out trying to become a normal, domestic, suburban couple. But these troubled lives evolve in unexpected ways and Maria grows into a responsible person that few conventional notions of “ordinary” can contain.

Trust is not available on DVD in the U.S. because the home video rights are currently held by a movie studio with no interest in distributing it. Previously you could “Watch Instantly” if you were a Netflix subscriber, although it was the old master you may remember from your worn-out VHS tape, but that has gone away recently as well. There are a few excellent DVD releases in Europe & Australia made from a digital transfer supervised by Hal in 2005. They all include a “making of” video we produced in 2005, featuring interviews with Adrienne Shelly, Martin Donovan, and Hal. If you don’t have a region free multi-standard (PAL/NTSC) DVD player, join the 21st Century with a modestly priced Toshiba SD-590KA or a rock-bottom priced Coby DVD-224.

Diaphana released “Trust me” (as it is known in France) along with Simple Men in 2006.
